With this summer creating a severe water shortage, the district administration has prepared a proposal to remove silt from the Mannu Palla lake, the largest waterbody, in Udupi city
The lake is located in about 100 acres of land in Manipal. A lot of plant shrubs and tree species add to the beauty of the lake. The water of lake is sourced from natural spring
But during peak summer, the water gets reduced. After the severe water scarcity witnessed this year, the administration wants to reduce the water problem in the city from next summer onwards.

The administration wants to increase the water storage capacity of this lake as this will lead to increase in the groundwater level and also help in recharging open wells and ground wells in a radius of 2 to 5 kilometers
“This will reduce water problem for the people in the area during summer,” G. Santosh Kumar, Project Director, Urban Development Cell told
The proposal for silt removal, estimated at 1.5 crore, is being prepared by the Urban Development Cell. It will be sent to the Ministry of Urban Development for its approval soon
Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, Deputy Commissioner, said that the work will help solve drinking water problem in at least three surrounding municipal wards
“Besides, these wards are at a higher elevation. We want to avoid a water crisis next year,” she said
The administration is giving priority to the task. In fact, it wants to take up the work before the monsoon begins
We will pursue the proposal with the Department of Urban Development and get its approval as soon as possible. After the approval, a short-term tender will be called and we will go ahead with the work,” Ms. Korlapati added
